what is it?

Subterranea is a makeup zine that consists of 7 makeup artists interpretations of the word 'subterranean': existing, occurring, or done under the earth's surface.

The zine is a testament to makeup as an art form and a showcase of each makeup artists' relationship with their craft.

what did i do?

In the making of this zine, I led a team of 3 other designers to plan, layout, and design the spreads of the zine. Each makeup look has a 2 page spread and I worked on one spread, the front and back covers, and the credits page of the zine. I also worked on promotional imagery for the @artemisusc instagram and created an animated video as well.

what did i use?

  • Adobe Photoshop
  • Adobe Illustrator
  • Adobe After Effects
  • Adobe InDesign

what was i thinking?

The design of subterranea is inspired by bright colors, flora and fauna, maximalism, as well as both natural and unnatural forms. We were also influenced by the craft of making zines by hand, so using objects like paper and tactile elements like stickers and cutouts. The makeup looks by the artists also gave a narrative thread in which to base our designs on.

A Pinterest board can also be accessed here named 'is it a zine?' to see more of my design inspiration.

what did i learn?

I led the design team for this project and it was a great opportunity to assign/manage work based on the skills and wants of the designers. We had weekly feedback/brainstorming sessions that allowed the zine to reflect the style of all the designers. It also improves the final result because of multiple sets of eyes going over every design.
