Concord is a record company that publishes music as well as houses many label groups with artists on its roster. Their design department is based in LA and has many designers and art directors who work on all the art that comes out of Concord.
From album covers and vinyl packaging, to music videos and experience design, Concord’s design department works on all of it at a high standard.
As a design intern in this fast-paced department, I worked on multiple assignments as they were assigned to me, with new assignments coming in every day I was there. These assignments were all reviewed by other designers on the team before they went out for production and printing.
Assignments included: sticker formatting and export, merch mockups, social media posts, Spotify playlist covers, vinyl LP packshots, and more.
The images I chose to present on this page are of the multiple spotify playlist covers I created while as an intern. These playlist covers were fully ideated by me and then completed using the Adobe Creative Suite. I often made multiple options to present to my higher-ups, of which they could choose from and give me notes to better fit the brief they had in mind.
My decision decisions were often backed by the songs in the playlist and the artist that the playlist cover was for. I used references from their past album covers, visual imagery associated with the genre, and just thought of what would appeal most to users, whether through the use of color or typography.
I learned the importance of talking to other designers about my designs for their input so my work could be the best it could be. I also learned how to do multiple assignments at once since it was such a fast-paced environment that was changing at all times. I especially learnt so much about the music industry and the importance of design alongside music to create a cohesive experience for listeners.
Finally, I learned a lot about print since things I worked on were then going to be printed for vinyl packaging. This included CMYK & Pantone color spotting, pre and post print production, and the conditions that are best for printing great quality products.
