For the final project of my DES 202 class, I designed and formatted an instructive photobook on city photography.
The photobook uses photos I took on my Kodak Vr35 film camera during my time in Seoul, South Korea. Over the span of 8 weeks, I viewed the city through my lens and captured various aspects that appealed to me.
n the designing of this photobook, I wanted to visualize the act of photo-taking with the use of motifs and shapes intertwined with the photos. Shapes like circles simulate the lens of camera, as well as squares that simulate the viewfinder. This forms a throughline for all the page layouts.
Because the photobook is instructive, I also made sure the text was illustrative too, with text being a fundamental part of the visual design of the pages. Words are layered on top of each other, repeated, made into curves and straight lines--all different ways of enhancing the text and guiding the eyes of the readers.
I have always had a passion for photography but never applied my design skills in conjuction with it. Through this project, I combined too great interests of mine into one cohesive and personal project. It was interesting to pair what I had intended and felt in the photos with a design that put forth that vision. I believe, in the end, the photos were enhanced by the designs and this came through in a set of layouts that are to be printed.
